Polypropylene plastic is strong, light and has excellent heat resistance. It acts as a barrier against moisture, oils and chemicals. When you try to open the thin plastic lining in the cereal box, it’s polypropylene. This will keep your cereal dry and fresh. PP is also commonly used in disposable nappies, buckets, plastic bottle caps, margarine and yogurt containers, potato chip bags, straws, packing tape and string.
Polypropylene is recyclable through some curbside recycling programs, but only about 3 percent of polypropylene products in the United States are currently recycled. Recycled PP is used to make landscaping border strippers, battery cases, brooms, bins and pallets. However, the #5 plastic is now becoming more accepted by recyclers.
Polypropylene is considered safe for reuse. To recycle products made from polypropylene, check with your local roadside program to see if they now accept the material.
