PVC is a soft, flexible plastic used to make clear plastic food packaging, food oil bottles, molar rings, children’s and pet toys, and blister packaging for countless consumer products. It is commonly used as a sheathing material for computer cables and in the manufacture of plastic pipes and plumbing components. Because PVC is relatively protected from sunlight and weather, it is used in the manufacture of window frames, garden hoses, trees, raised beds and trellises.
PVC is known as “toxic plastic” because it contains high levels of toxins that can be filtered throughout its life cycle. Almost all products using PVC require raw materials to be built; Less than 1% of PVC material is recycled.
Products made from PVC plastic are not recyclable. While some PCV products can be reused, PVC products should not be used in food or for children.
